community, black gun ownership lags far behind white gun ownership. perhaps we know wayne lapierre is wrong about good guys and bad guys and guns. many of us find him hard to trust. his recent editorial in the daily caller spoke of supposedly rampant crime and murder in some place he called south brooklyn in the days after hurricane sandy. i live in brooklyn and there is no place referred to as south brooklyn but i think it's safe to say when he says that, much of the country envisions a place clogged with black people. if adam lanza with walked in a school in south brooklyn, we would probably not be having a sustained national conversation about guns. adam just smushed the pain of the gun epidemic in america's faw face but black people have been living with that pain for so long we're numb to it. black on black crime is a far more prevalent problem. we need greater out rage over that. i say this as the son of a long time gun owner who carries a gun to keep him safe as he moves through boston's black areas. when people say what has obama done for the black community, tell them whateve

wayne lapierre and the nra and wayne lapierre rants that he put out in the "daily caller" yesterday, again focused on the fear that you just talked about, carol. talking about hispanic gangs going crazy. talking about those people in brooklyn after sandy. i mean, it was just a very racist rant that does not do any good for their position. and the reality of it is, carol, the positions -- the proposals that the president has put out are very sensible. there's a quinnipiac poll that came out yesterday that essentially said that 56% of americans, a majority, not a huge majority, but a majority, support bans on assault weapons on and on the high-capacity magazine clips. 92%, carol, support the universal background checks. >> but there's no chance of -- this community leader also says, you can talk about banning assault weapons all you want. but you have to get to the root of the problem. and the problem she says, isn't so much about guns, it's about the gun culture. and the culture of violence. >> i agree. >> especially on the main streets of chicago. go ahead. >> and the president abso

. this caller is plugged into what wayne lapierre is talking about. he thinks the president has a secret agenda that will end up with the confiscation of guns and the takeover of towns and neighborhoods and our country. that is ridiculous. of steps opinion is out with gun owners in this country. host: from twitter -- as one of the sponsors of the assault weapons ban of 2013, tells about the exemptions. guest: i encourage anybody who has this question to go and read the assault weapons ban that we introduced some weeks ago. that bill actually lists several thousand weapons that would not be illegal under the law. that is not an includes a list. it is just a set of examples of weapons, over 10,000 weapons, that would still be available to individuals. the assault weapons ban says that a gun that has a detachable clip and another military feature like a pistol grip, that would be reserved for military usage. the thousands of weapons today that are used largely for hunting and sports shooting would still be available that is a really good resource. i cannot recite chapter and verse every gun

political heft. you know, wayne lapierre has spoken the last couple of days with the kind of hate and fear that clearly consumes him but also consigns the nra as an organization to the political fringe of this national debate. and certainly, he no longer speaks for many nra members, no longer speaks for the majority of gun owners, and that's a fundamental difference as well. so i think the sense of urgency has been maintained and sustained. the momentum is there. the judiciary committee's going to mark up a bill. in other words, frame the final language of the bill next month if not this month. and those votes will occur on the floor of the senate, i hope and believe, because the president's absolutely right. those families, the victims, the first responders, all americans deserve a vote. >> in terms of the way that the president phrased that in that repetitive cadence that he had that was so moving but also very specific saying these deserve a vote, deserve a vote, deserve a vote, and he went out of his way to say if you want to vote no that's okay but we ought to vote. i wonder what
